The only memorial for the “liquidators”
of the MAYAK complex, members of the teams sent in to combat the consequences of the accident. Not until 2007 was it erected, in the city of Kyshtym, Chelyabinsk Region. The accident is better known as the Kyshtym accident, because that city was the settlement closest to the complex that was not secret. Trains bringing equipment and personnel for the nuclear industrial complex used to pull into the city’s railway station. The region of Chelyabinsk is now the home to the largest group of persons who suffered from the accident. Most of them, though, can expect no compensation from the state for the harm that was done to them. The civil servants refuse to accept their documents and the courts refuse to acknowledge their rights.
